Chinese Scientists Develop Early Tumor Diagnostics Based on Mass Spectrometry Flow Technology

Malignant tumors are insidious in onset and difficult to diagnose at an early stage, and the sensitivity and specificity of serological markers currently in clinical use still need to be improved. Mass spectrometry flow (CyTOF), as a newly developed technique to detect the composition and number of immune cells, can obtain high-dimensional information on the composition, phenotype and function of peripheral blood immune cells. Evaluation of peripheral immune status using mass spectrometry flow technology is expected to provide a novel tool for early screening and early diagnosis of tumors.

Recently, in a study published in Gut entitled “Mass cytometry-based peripheral blood analysis as a novel tool for early detection of solid tumors: a multicentre study In the study entitled “Mass cytometry-based peripheral blood analysis as a novel tool for early detection of solid tumours: a multicentre study” published in Gut, researchers from the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine constructed a screening model for hepatocellular carcinoma and pancreatic carcinoma based on the detection of cellular alterations in peripheral blood cells by mass spectrometry flow assay, and achieved excellent tumor diagnostic efficacy, which is expected to increase the rate of early diagnosis of related tumors, and thus improve the prognosis of these patients.

This study is the largest mass spectrometry-based study to assess peripheral immunity and develop a tumor diagnostic method, which clearly demonstrates that alterations in peripheral immune cell subpopulations can reflect tumorigenesis and development. This method has the potential to serve as a pan-cancer early screening and early diagnosis, and is expected to play an important role in the future physical examination of healthy people and screening of high-risk groups for tumors.
